Do you need to grind concrete before a new floor goes down?

Concrete grinding and surface preparation in Stockton means using diamond tools to take off old coatings, paint, glue and high spots, so the slab is clean, dry and free of grease and oil before a new floor goes on it.

Most people call us because a coating is peeling, an old tile or carpet floor came up and left glue behind, or they've picked out a new garage floor coating and want it to stay put. The price mostly moves with the size of the floor, what's on it now and how much repair the slab needs, and the schedule turns on how old the slab is and what we find under the old covering. Before we start, we check with the office that covers your address and take care of the permit application if one's needed. My visit ends with a clear recommendation and a written estimate for your floor, so you know the method and the price before anything happens.

What happens after you call about concrete grinding in Stockton?

  1. Call or send a request

Call (209) 420-1084 or use the form, and we'll get back to you within one business day to set a time. It helps to know the floor's size in square feet, what covers it now, and the pour date if the slab is new.

  2. I come look at the slab

I check for moisture and old coatings and ask how you use the space, because that decides how far we grind and what goes on after. You get a clear recommendation and a free written estimate, with no obligation to go ahead.

  3. Our crew does the prep

Once you say go, we set a date and our crew handles the grinding, repairs and any install, with me checking the work along the way. If the slab was just poured, its age sets the earliest date we can coat.

  4. We walk the finished floor

When the work's done, I walk it with you, whether that's a ground slab ready for its finish or the new floor on top. Satisfaction guaranteed on every job.

Concrete grinding and prep, and the work that comes after it

Prep is the part you don't see and the part that decides whether the new floor holds, so we don't rush it. Our crew closes off the work area first, then runs diamond grinders with dust collection to take off old coatings, paint, glue and high spots. We fill cracks and patch chipped spots, then vacuum until the slab is clean, dry and free of dirt, grease and oil, and I check the surface before anything goes on it. We also keep cement dust and wash water off your driveway and out of the gutter, because San Joaquin County's stormwater program points out that cement wash from construction gets tracked onto streets and washed into storm drains and local waterways. We're based in Stockton and work across San Joaquin County and into nearby counties, including Lodi, Manteca, Tracy, Modesto and Elk Grove.

Grinding is usually the first step, not the last. On a bare floor you want to keep plain, we follow it with concrete sealing so stains and water stay on top instead of soaking in. When grinding turns up a slab that's too worn, pitted or uneven for a coating to look right, I'll tell you straight, and concrete resurfacing and overlays give you a fresh surface to build on instead.

Concrete prep questions from Stockton owners

Is grinding or shotblasting better for removing old floor glue?

Shotblasting with steel shot can often clean off a thin layer of old mastic or adhesive, but grinding is the better tool once the glue is thick. On thick layers the shot tends to bounce instead of cutting, so expect extra prep work there. I look at how much is left during the estimate and pick the method from that.

How long does new concrete need to cure before it can be coated?

At least 28 days, going by one coating maker's guide, which says new concrete has to reach that age before its coatings go on. The same maker says to hold off on epoxy or urethane when the slab holds too much moisture, which is why I check moisture before we set a coating date. If your slab was just poured, give us the pour date and we'll plan the grinding and coating for after that point.

How does a concrete grinding crew keep dust down indoors?

A capable dust collector hooked to the grinder does most of it, and one maker's guide says one must be used because diamond grinding throws off a lot of dust. NIOSH testing found that every type of grinder shroud it tried cut dust exposure by at least 90%, so it's fair to ask any crew what dust collector they bring and whether the grinder has a shroud. The dust matters because it carries crystalline silica, and Cal/OSHA's construction silica rule covers renovation work like this.

Can I grind off old black mastic left from a removed floor?

Not until you know whether it has asbestos in it, because federal OSHA treats grinding that breaks up intact asbestos-containing material as an aggressive removal method. Bring it up with us before any grinding starts, so that question's settled before a grinder touches the glue.

How much does concrete grinding and surface prep cost in Stockton?

Across the US, concrete polishing, which is built on the same diamond grinding, usually costs about $8 to $9 per square foot, and that's a national market figure, not a Stockton quote or our price. Prep for a coating is priced on its own, and thick glue, a heavy old coating or a lot of crack repair push it up. Your price for your floor comes from the written estimate after I see it.

What license should a concrete floor contractor have in California?

The Contractors State License Board puts concrete restoration, floor hardening and coloring concrete under its D-6 concrete-related services class, so ask any crew which class it holds. We're licensed and insured, and we're glad to answer that before you hire us.

  • Concrete Sealing

Once the slab is ground clean, a sealer can protect a bare floor from stains, oil and water without adding a full coating on top.

  • Concrete Resurfacing & Overlays

If grinding shows pitting, scaling or heavy wear that a coating can't hide, an overlay gives you a fresh, even surface to build on.
